You've heard the expression "It's raining cats and dogs," right? Well, in Baltimore right now for one man, it is raining baseballs and despite a past status as a homer hitting machine, Chris Davis cannot get a simple base hit!
Davis went 0-for-5 to set the big-league mark for the longest hitless streak by a position player, extending his drought to 49 consecutive at-bats in the Baltimore Orioles’ 12-4 rout of the Oakland A's Monday night.
This is as bad as it gets, ladies and gentleman.
The Baltimore Sun reports:
“I'm pulling for him to get a hit, pulling for him to just have the ball hit outfield grass somewhere,” manager Brandon Hyde said. “And it didn't. It's just one of those things. You've just got to stay upbeat and stay positive. It's just battling. He's battling, and it's cool to see. You just feel for him, and wish that something would fall”. Davis went on to strike out to end the seventh inning, and the Orioles scored five times in the eighth, allowing him one last chance to break his streak. Even with most of what remained from the announced crowd of 6,585 fans — the lowest for an open-admission game in Camden Yards history — standing and cheering him wildly, Davis struck out again to make it 49 straight at-bats without a hit.
Davis has heard plenty of boos from the home crowd this season, but many among a meager crowd of 6,585 at Camden Yards offered him encouragement with every trip to the plate. The announced attendance was the lowest in the history of the ballpark, with the exception of a game in 2015 that was closed to the public at a time when the city was plagued by rioting.
