Chris Davis Breaks 0-for-54 Slump With Two-Run Single

USA Today reports:

Major League Baseball's longest hitting slump is finally over.

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis snapped an 0-for-54 slump with a two-run single off Boston Red Sox's Rick Porcello on Saturday. It was the longest drought ever by a position player. He broke Eugenio Velez's record of 46 at-bats earlier this week. Davis hit a 1-0 pitch to shallow right, driving in Trey Mancini and Dwight Smith Jr. It had been 210 days since Davis lost got a hit last Sept. 14. This season, he was 0-for-33 with 16 strikeouts before finally getting his first hit of the season.

"That's a long time without getting a hit," he said. "I don't know what I'm going to do with it, but obviously something special."

Davis had been humble during the entire hitless streak and understood the boos he received at home games. But at Fenway Park, he received an ovation from fans and even showed his sense of humor when he asked for the ball that broke the streak.
